The National Home Infusion Association (NHIA) is pleased to be the recipient of an American Society of Association Executives (ASAE) 2021 Gold Circle Award for the association’s bi-monthly INFUSION print magazine, which underwent a redesign in 2019.

National Home Infusion Association Announces 2022 Annual Conference to be held in Nashville
NHIA has announced that their 2022 Annual Conference will be held on-site in Nashville, Tennessee, March 12-16, 2022. The conference is the premier event for the home and specialty infusion industry and will be held at the Gaylord Opryland Resort & Convention Center, just minutes away from downtown Nashville.

NHIF is proud to announce that the recipient of the 2021 Outstanding Abstract Achievement Award (OAAA) is Christina Ritchey, MS, RD, LD, CNSC. The OAAA is awarded to an individual that presents a poster during the National Home Infusion Association’s (NHIA) Annual Conference on a relevant home and specialty infusion topic.

NHIF announces 2021 Lynn Giglione Women in Leadership Award recipient
NHIF  is proud to announce that Cindy Sumrall, RN, BSN, CRNI, IgCN is the recipient of the 2021 Lynn Giglione Women in Leadership Award. The Lynn Giglione Women in Leadership Award is given each year to recognize and honor trail-blazing and accomplished women leaders who have distinguished themselves within their organizations and among their industry peers.

NHIA Announces Recipient of 2021 Gene Graves Lifetime Achievement Award
NHIA is proud to announce that Varner R. Richards, PharmD is the recipient of the 2021 Gene Graves Lifetime Achievement Award. The Gene Graves Lifetime Achievement Award is the highest honor that NHIA bestows on a member of the home and specialty infusion community.

NHIA Submits Comments on Proposed EN and PN LCDs
On April 10, NHIA submitted written comments to the Durable Medical Equipment Medicare Administrative Contractors (DME MACs) on proposed local coverage determinations (LCDs) for enteral nutrition (DL38955) and parenteral nutrition (DL38953). The association also provided oral comments in a public meeting held by the DME MACs in March.

NHIA Sends Letter to Biden Administration on Home & Specialty Infusion
Today, NHIA sent a letter to key members of the Biden administration, urging them to prioritize home-based care as the nation continues its recovery from COVID-19. In the letter, NHIA applauded the administration’s focus on health care and combatting the coronavirus, and outlined four policy recommendations related to the home and specialty infusion industry.

NHIA Offers Suggestions on MOU implementation to FDA, NABP
On February 1, NHIA sent a letter to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and the National Association of Boards of Pharmacy (NABP) offering suggestions to improve implementation of the Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) between the 2 entities. Specifically, NHIA encouraged: state boards of pharmacy to act expeditiously in determining whether or not they will enter into the MOU and make special efforts to communicate their intentions; states to give pharmacies at least 120 days’ notice; state boards of pharmacy and NABP to conduct regular stakeholder outreach; and NABP to create a compounding stakeholder information resource where information can be consolidated regarding the status of each state’s participation.

The National Home Infusion Association (NHIA) submitted comments on the proposed change of the External Infusion Pump LCD, adding coverage for chronic inflammatory demyelinating polyneuropathy (CIDP) as an approved indication for Hizentra.

NHIA Announces 16 Home Infusion Fellows in Program’s Inaugural Year
The National Home Infusion Association (NHIA) is pleased to announce the inaugural Fellow Program (FNHIA) cohort, made up of highly accomplished home and specialty infusion professionals. The program is administered and funded by the National Home Infusion Foundation (NHIF), thanks to a generous contribution from Integrated Medical Systems, Inc. (IMS), the 2021 sponsor of the NHIA Fellow Program.

NHIA Submits Comments on Termination of FDA’s Unapproved Drugs Initiative
NHIA has submitted comments to the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) on the notice, “Termination of the Food and Drug Administration’s (FDA) Unapproved Drugs Initiative; Request for Information Regarding Drugs Potentially Generally Recognized as Safe and Effective”, which outlines the FDA’s decision to terminate the Unapproved Drugs Initiative (UDI).

Improving Access to COVID Vaccines for Homebound, Rural, and Vulnerable Populations
The National Home Infusion Association (NHIA) and National Association for Home Care and Hospice (NAHC) are urging the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) and state health departments to ensure home infusion pharmacies are able to access vaccines and supply them either directly, or in collaboration with home health providers.

NHIA announces keynote for first-ever Global Congress on Home Infusion Therapy
The National Home Infusion Association (NHIA) will be hosting the first-ever Global Congress on Home Infusion Therapy (GCHIT) on April 19, 2021, and Daniel Kraft, MD, a health technology expert, will serve as the event’s keynote speaker. Held as a pre-conference to NHIA’s 2021 Annual Conference, the GCHIT offers an opportunity for home infusion clinicians and providers from across the world to share experiences, ideas, accomplishments, and challenges associated with the delivery of infused medications in the home setting.

NHIA Submits Comments on CMS’ DMEPOS Proposed Rule
NHIA has submitted comments to the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) on the proposed rule “Medicare Program; Durable Medical Equipment, Prosthetics, Orthotics, and Supplies (DMEPOS) Policy Issues and Level II of the Healthcare Common Procedure Coding System (HCPCS)”, published on November 4. The rule proposed new criteria for the definition of when an ambulatory infusion pump is “appropriate for use in the home”. NHIA members are encouraged to submit their own comments to CMS on this proposed rule. All comments are due by 5 p.m. on January 4, 2021.

CMS Proposal Would Revise the DMEPOS External Infusion Pump Benefit
The National Home Infusion Association has been engaging with members and stakeholders regarding the impacts to home infusion from the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) proposed rule: “Durable Medical Equipment, Prosthetics, Orthotics, and Supplies (DMEPOS) Policy Issues and Level II of the Healthcare Common Procedures Coding System (HCPCS), CMS-1738-P.”

NHIA Commends CMS for Retiring Obsolete Parenteral and Enteral Nutrition LCDs
On October 8, 2020, a joint publication was released by the Durable Medical Equipment Medicare Administrative Contractors (DME MACs) stating that the existing LCDs for PN and EN are being retired effective November 12, 2020, “due to the evolution of parenteral nutrition clinical paradigms.”

The National Home Infusion Association (NHIA) has awarded Congressman Eliot Engel (D-NY) of New York’s 16th congressional district, with the 2020 Congressional Leadership Lifetime Achievement Award for his leadership on home infusion coverage for Medicare patients.

The National Home Infusion Foundation (NHIF) has announced a public comment period for the next phase of its Benchmarking Program that includes two new metrics to launch in 2020.

NHIA members are encouraged to review the draft benchmarking participation guides for collecting industry-wide outcome data for 30-day Rehospitalizations, and the Status at Discharge for patients receiving infusions in the home or suite setting. A revised definition for the Discharge Reasons is also proposed to support data collection for the new benchmarking metrics. Deadline to submit comment is December 31. Send comments to nhifdata@nhia.org.
