Closing the Part D Coverage Gap

Medicare’s coverage of home infusion therapy is limited. Only about 40 drugs therapies are covered under the Part B DMEPOS benefit, leaving the vast majority of home infused-drugs covered by Part D prescription drugs plan. Part D plans only cover the drugs itself, which often leaves the cost for the extensive wrap-around services, equipment, and supplies the responsibility of the beneficiary. This out-of-pocket expense can cause beneficiaries to choose to make daily trips to outpatient infusion centers or to the seek care in institutional settings that are covered more extensively by Medicare. NHIA is striving to bring about Medicare comprehensive coverage of home infusion therapy, which is standard for virtually all other payers.
