The year 2011 marks two decades of growth and success for NHIA and its members—and maximizing those 20 years of achievement to craft a future of thriving possibilities will require alternate-site infusion stakeholders to authentically collaborate as never before. Even from the earliest days of home infusion, providers and business firms looked toward an industry horizon bright with opportunities, yet confronted by an uncertain home-based health care landscape. Remember when accreditation was something only hospitals could achieve and the concept of a national coding standard for home infusion claims seemed unattainable? When pharmacists made all medication deliveries and patients administered their 5-fluorouracil infusions with a metallic gold Cormed® infusion pump? Much has changed since those days of old—some barriers have been broken and many challenges have been met with innovations, allowing our field to emerge and better define itself. And at the heart of such success have been diverse industry stakeholders, collaborating together to advocate for our patients, advancing the field and the quality of the care we provide along the way.
Once again, 20 years later, our horizon is radiant with possibilities. Recent accomplishments—such as the development of the NHIA Standards for Ethical Practice (due to be released at the 2011 NHIA Annual Conference) and the impressive success of Phase I of the NHIA Industry-Wide Data Initiative—are already shaping anew our field's future direction and the role we will play in the health care delivery reform discussion. Reflecting upon our historical perspective, we know well that much good can be realized if we have the courage and determination to partner authentically to drive change and innovation. Gather with colleagues and key leaders from the NHIA Board and Executive Team to both celebrate and strategically leverage previous accomplishments to forge new opportunities for our companies, our industry and our patients—as we proactively shape our bright alternate-site infusion horizon!
Opening Entertainment:
42Five—A Timeless Musical Experience!
Evolving from a street corner barbershop sound, and drawing on funk, rock, jazz and blues, 42Five is unlike any musical experience around—recreating an entire instrumental band with nothing but their five voices, a feat which must be seen and heard to be believed! Layne, Earl, Danny, Ryan and Geoff are a talented a cappella quintet of Orlando-based musicians who bring timeless, classic music to life with their unique blend of vocal harmonies—and a comic, engaging performance style that's all their own.
42Five achieved national status when they won Ed McMahon's internet talent search ("NextBigStar"). In addition to singing a number of famous radio jingles, they have appeared at NBC's Today Show and travel the United States performing interactive shows for corporate and college hosts. Their long list of clients includes Celebrity Cruises, Walt Disney World, Kellogg's, Marriot and IBM, just to name a few! NHIA is excited to welcome the phenomenal melodies of this amazing group to the NHIA 2011 stage, as we celebrate our 20th anniversary. With a musical repertoire that spans decades, 42Five has something for everyone—so sit back, relax and prepare to be transported to a time when music was fun, lyrics were funnier and an immensely entertaining evening could be had with five guys, a few chairs and a handful of microphones!
"Original, entertaining, great!"

NHIA Tuesday General Session
Featuring Allison Massari
Transforming Patient Lives—The Art of Person-Centered Home Infusion Therapy
Continuing Education Contact Hours
Pharmacy and Nursing—1.25
9:00 - 10:30 AM
Education Overview:
Painted on a canvas of human lives, our field is unquestionably filled with entrepreneurial, yet compassionate success stories. Now 20-plus years in the making, passionate NHIA members are actualizing the vision of providing infusion therapy to home-based patients—people in need of care who would otherwise have remained institutionalized. These ardent professionals fought for, and achieved, recognition of our industry by payers, regulatory agencies and consumers alike. As we currently scan the shifting market landscape, whatever happens with the national health care reform debate, the one constant at the center of our creativity and commitment will always be our patients. Like an ensemble of artists, the interdisciplinary home infusion team crafts an exquisite model of care that yields tailored, person-centered treatment for the patient, while at a vital savings to the health care system. NHIA members are positively impacting patient quality of life and the larger health care picture on a daily basis—yes, enhanced care at lower cost is quite an accomplishment indeed!
Our keynote speaker also understands health care intimately. She, too, is familiar with infusion treatments, but is not a provider, payer or a regulator. Allison Massari, award-winning painter and sculptor, is a patient—and has experienced firsthand the critical value of what personalized health care delivered by committed providers means, when facing the horrors of life-threatening conditions. Burned alive in a fire caused by a head-on auto collision 12 years ago, followed by a traumatic brain injury from a second high-speed car accident just two years later, Massari's story is more than just one of survival. It's a passionate story of finding the internal strength and commitment to allow hope to flourish—and to inspire the collaboration of teams of medical personnel to truly demonstrate the power of authentic patient-provider relationships. Drawing on her personal experiences with empathic, devoted health care providers (including alternate-site infusion therapy), she will share her moving perspectives "from the other side of the stethoscope"—calling upon each NHIA member to recognize and use the transformative power they have to help their patients heal, recover and thrive. As a patient and professional artist herself, Massari is perhaps in the best of positions to affirm the quality of life "beauty" we create for our patients everyday, upon the home infusion canvas.

NHIA Wednesday General Session
Featuring NHIA Leadership and Advocacy Experts
New Congress, New Possibilities—Adjusting Our Legislative Approaches and Leveraging Our Grassroots Capacity
Supported by an educational grant from Provista
Continuing Education Contact Hours
Pharmacy and Nursing—1.25
9:00 - 10:30 a.m.
Education Overview:
Dramatic change is on the horizon, as the 112th Congress is seated with many questions surrounding the future of the 2010 Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act (PPACA). Where does our field of alternate-site infusion fit within the larger health care reform picture, as funds are disbursed to explore new initiatives—such as Accountable Care Organizations (ACOs), Patient-Centered Medical Homes (PCMHs), Bundling, and Comparative Effectiveness Research (CER), to name a few? As these emerging health care delivery paradigms are investigated by the new Center for Medicare and Medicaid Innovation (CMI), home infusion providers must remain vigilant in delivering the message that the low-cost, patient-centered site of care is in the alternate-site setting. It is imperative that we continue our critical work identifying sources of data to help us articulate the value of professional services—and the patient stories that can demonstrate the harm caused to older and disabled Americans by the lack of a meaningful Medicare home infusion benefit. We must further collaborate together around our grassroots actions to gain support from the incoming 112th Congress for issues critical to home infusion providers and their patients.
The NHIA Legislative Team and a panel of advocacy experts will review the latest developments taking place on Capitol Hill and at the Center for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS). Interactive in nature, this advocacy general session format will be conducive to open discussion with the audience and offer a chance to address specific questions about how current legislative activities and health care reform initiatives may influence you and your organization—as well as what you and your organization need to do to enhance our grassroots impact. As we embark upon a new two-year Congress, some fresh possibilities may surface, but the brutal fact remains that both Houses will still be constantly challenging the health care provider community to do more for less. In confronting these realities and seeking to leverage any opportunities that do materialize, NHIA's legislative plan will need to continue to evolve and grow to best represent our field and your interests. Don't miss this thoughtful, forthright discussion about how best to strategically advance our grassroots capacity and legislative goals.
